Anxiety eventually consumes your whole life. You may start out by avoiding situations that make you uncomfortable and mildly anxious and that can also become a trigger for your anxiety just thinking about it. Avoiding social situations and keeping yourself distracted may help you be more comfortable in the beginning but soon you become a hostage to your avoidance pattern and a prisoner to your own beliefs and lack of coping skills.

Anxiety can come in all forms. It can simply be a restlessness, tension, nervousness that keeps us off center or it can be in connection to a event such at interviewing, going on stage, test taking, meeting a new person. Social Anxiety is a big one in that we may want to become involved in a significant relationship but our fears of what people will think of us and our own judgements of ourselves not being good enough keep us worrying about how we are seen, and what we say and do in any given moment. We are constantly judging ourselves and fear others are judging us.

For many, the root cause of anxiety stems from unmet needs in childhood. Failure to maintain a secure, nurturing, predicable bond in childhood sets up a shame matrix of inadequacy and insecurity where we never really trust or feel like we belong. This can result in a number of self sabotaging behaviors and frustrations leading to increased insecurity, obsessive thinking, anxiety and worry.


I remember once in graduate school my psychology professor commented to me after a project that I was very smart. I reacted to this comment by being upset and critical of my psychology professor. Latter thinking about it, I realized my Father who had a third grade education call me “stupid” most of my life and my reaction to my psych professor was really in defense of my Father who I didn’t want to make wrong.


Attachment is a major need in childhood to feel secure and have a sense of positive self-esteem. We normally get our self-esteem from belonging to a nurturing, affirming, unconditional loving family system. For many growing up, however, a nurturing predictable secure bond was absent or not consistently available, or we were given only selective praise when we were top performers.


So for children to maintain a sense of connection and belonging, they had to subdue, repress, or outright give up parts of themselves. Usually the first thing to go in early childhood is their connection to their own feelings and needs. We learned how to numb off our sensations, hold our breath and disconnect from feelings and needs early so as not to put an extra burden on the already disconnected and overwhelmed family system.


Unintentionally parents reinforce this by giving their children the message “I can’t deal with you right now” (Your needs don’t matter) (Others needs are more important than yours) “You’re too much for me to handle” (You’re a burden) “Don’t cry or I’ll give you something to cry about” (Your feelings and needs are dangerous and could bring down the whole family) “Because you asked, You don’t get it.” (It’s better to wait never ask for anything for yourself )

When we go against these injunctions, we naturally feel anxious. Children unfortunately don’t know how to abstract and personalize everything. Core decisions about “Who I am” and “What my function and purpose is” is already established by age six. For children who don’t feel they belong, the message is clear. “Don’t Exist,” Don’t Ask,” Don’t Need,” Don’t Fail,” “Don’t Feel” “Don’t Think” “Don t Matter” and “Don’t Connect to Yourself” etc. There is ultimately nothing left but an empty shell and masquerade of the original self. I’ve seen a number of ways unconsciously adults have learned to become helpless and adapt by giving up connecting to themselves and their source of aliveness.

Many people feel anxious from time to time. But when feelings of anxiety occur regularly and begins to interfere with your job, your ability to think clearly, your life goals, relationships and/or takes away from your feeling good about yourself, it’s time to act and stop thinking and hoping it will go away on its on.


As anxiety increases the higher cortex shuts off, rational thought disappears and you enter a fight, flight freeze reactive cycle. Your energy system goes on hyper alert and hyper tension becomes the norm. Your reactive mind takes over and soon everything becomes a threat. You start avoiding people, places and situations that may trigger your anxiety. Your world begins to shrink. Your energy continually drains and diminishes from over thinking, obsessive worry and depleting anxiety.

This downward spiral can create and reinforce a number of self-fulfilling prophesies creating additional pain and suffering. The anxiety can take over one’s entire existence, limiting all aspects of your life, and relationships. Overwhelming anxiety and obsessive worry can keep you from enjoying your full capacity for aliveness and passion and significantly stunt your potential for future growth.
